'Exit Through the Gift Shop': But Is It Art?

I saw Exit Through the Gift Shop on opening night with friend and colleague Sudha Krishna. We both enjoyed the film and got a lot out of it: one sign of a successful film is its ability to spark long bar conversations immediately afterward. In this case, Exit was successful. Hilarious, sad, maddening, and exciting, I recommend this film to anyone with an interest in street art, travel, or ditching the everyday in search of a nigh-impossible goal.

The cinema was half-empty, which was a bit perplexing. Vancouver's art scene takes itself very seriously, so I had predicted a sold-out showing with loads of fixies parked outside the Ridge. I was wrong. Maybe because the Canucks were busy getting their asses handed to them in the playoffs.
