Locals vs Tourists: Patterns of Photo-Snapping

jordan matthew ... - Posted on 08 June 2010

This Flickr set from Eric Fischer, called Locals and Tourists, shows the photo-snapping habits of visitors to a city vs. those who have lived in that city for at least a month. The blue points in Locals and Tourists signify images taken by users whose "home" location match that of the photo, whereas red points signify images taken by those outside their home area.

As one would expect, the tourists tend to cluster in a given city's CBD, but it was startling how few images were shot and uploaded from outside these downtown cores by non-residents. Even residents tend not to photograph huge swaths of their own cities. The snapshot of New York City was startling: tourists only added images to Flickr from a small part of Manhattan, which is in turn a small part of NYC. Queens and The Bronx don't seem to know that Flickr even exists.
